Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to catch a large number of Stripers?
Mid June to mid September with the month of August being the best time.

What is the best time to catch a trophy Striper?
Trophy stripers are most active when surface water temperatures range in the mid-fifties.

When do the Stripers surface frequently?
Generally, the Stripers go on a bit of a feeding frenzy in mid-October and can be seen feeding on the surface during any part of the day. This activity may occur for about three to four weeks.

What is the life span of a Striper?
A Striper can live for up to 30 years in saltwater.

Do Lanier Stripers reproduce successfully?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. While the females and males perform their reproductive functions, biologists from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources believe the fertilized eggs are subjected to an excessive amount of solids thus preventing the eggs from hatching.

Should I request a morning or afternoon trip?
If possible, try to be flexible the day of the trip. Because I am on the lake almost every day, I will be able to best assess this within two days or so of the scheduled trip and advise you accordingly.

Okay, we have signed-up for a trip – what do we bring?
The most important things to bring are those items that will best protect you from the sun i.e., sunscreen, sunglasses (for UV protection), hat, and possibly a long-sleeve shirt. In addition, bring your food, snacks, and drinks.

How long is the average trip?
One thing that you will notice about me is that I seldom wear a watch while fishing. For the most part, my fishing finding and fish catching skills are intuitive and not related to time. If you have made arrangements for a four hour trip and we are catching fish at the end of the fourth hour, I could not in good conscience take you back to the ramp unless you made such a request. My favorite trip – length wise – is seven hours.

Do you sometimes book two trips in one day?
Seldom. Generally, I prefer to work with one group for about seven hours or so. Under these circumstances, I almost always restrict myself to one guide trip per day.

Do I need a fishing license?
Yes, unlike some states, every angler must have a Georgia Fishing License which may be obtained online.

Why do you have so much fishing equipment?
A quality fishing guide who has junky equipment is short-changing his customers. In any setting, we might be casting, trolling, or down lining. So, instead of converting rod/reels/terminal tackle on your “dime”, I bring specific tackle for a specific fishing technique!
